Floyd Golf Star
I've been remiss in not pointing out to the world that the Floyd County High School's golf team won the Virginia State Championship (Class A) for the second year in a row and the third time in seven years. It's a co-ed team and its current star is Jessica Hollandsworth. Yes, she's playing head to head against the guys...and...she's winning.
For those of you who follow women's golf, be on the lookout for her in the coming years! She's the next Morgan Pressel...and perhaps, then some.

Blueridge has posted some pics from time to time- Sebring too has a stellar golf team womens and mens ,swimming too. Volleyball lost second round. I begin mens and Womens basketball and wrestling next week. I work athletics for the high school, my 8th year. love it !!!I get pictures from Flicker and various websites that send them to me , and I take a lot--out of memory cards at present boooo

This is right up your alley to cover and I'm so glad you did. We're all very proud of Jessica here in Floyd!

I just thought I would try something different -- leaving a second comment that was NOT just like the first one. I guess I got some of my own medicine yesterday when you left 3, huh! Funny!

I grew up playing with what were expected to be golf prodigies in Floyd back in mid-1980s. I'm not surprised at Floyd residents excelling in golf as it is one of few non-team sports available in the area and the availabiltiy of Great Oaks CC, not to mention some really cool nearby mountain courses like Olde Mill CC.
Some of the best players in my days either didn't make the cut or had some tragedy befall them while playing at top golf universities. But I'm sure this new group of prodigies will do just fine.
For those in the know and for nostalgia, here's to driving the green on Great Oaks #2, cutting the dog-leg on #4, reaching #6 in two, and hitting a great draw on #7. Definitely some of the best days of my life were spent there. And here's to playing the front nine twice as the back nine didn't exist in my day.

Thanks for visiting Spatter and too, for leaving a comment. I was particularly intrigued by your Great Oaks hole synopsis. I’ll think of them and you next time I play there…which for me will be next summer. I’ll be heading for FL soon and playing where it’s warm. Being a relative newcomer to Floyd, I didn’t know that Great Oaks was once only 9 holes. Do you know when it got the other 9? Which 9 was first? As for Olde Mill, I’ve heard of it, but can’t remember where it’s located. Is it between Meadows of Dan and Hillsville on 58?
