Desiderata

The message of the poem "Desiderata" has rung true to me throughout the years.  It's been...and it remains...a resolution by which I try to live.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly,
and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant:
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons
than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career,
however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune,
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe
no less than the trees and the stars,
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God
whatever you conceive him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be careful.
Strive to be happy.

Happy New Year to all!

At The Craft Fair

Yesterday, Delray Beach had its annual crafts fair.  It's one of many that go on this time of year down here.  It was a lovely day...sunny and warm...so Judy, Shaynee, and I decided to take advantage of it and go there.  Lots of people had the same idea.  This was good for Shaynee, by the way.  Getting more comfortable and less excited when interacting with strangers...especially children...is good preparation for her therapy dog training.

It was a relatively small affair, but there were interesting things to see, including a couple of booths that were doggie oriented.  There was one selling doggie treats called things like "Paw Licken Chicken", "Pet Me Pumpkin" and "Pea Mutt Butter".  I think this last one should have been "Pee Mutt Butter", no?

And another was selling canine ready to wear.  You know, little jacket sweaters and such.  But this vendor had something I'd never seen before: chiffon neck rings...of all things! There they are hanging on the rack in the background below. We passed on them, but did find Shaynee a new sun cap.

When we felt like we had "done the show, we headed back to base via a pizza parlor not too far from home.  They have tables out on the sidewalk so we could stop there with Shaynee.  We're fortunate here in south Florida to have lots of restaurants with outside eating areas - why not!  And then, last year, Broward County passed an ordinance making it OK for restaurants to permit dogs in them.

Today is a "catch-up" day...catching up with things around here and errands. Judy's watering the new plants, Shaynee's chasing lizards, and I'm catching up on desk work while watching (again) Nanny McPhee.  It's a wonderful charming & magical little story with Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, and Angela Lansbury...three of my favorites.

Later I'll head out to make some returns.  I'm sorry to say one of them is a toilet seat to Home Depot. There's always a line there.  The other day I found one I liked and picked out a box right behind its display.  This morning, when putting it on, I discovered that it was neither the same style nor color of the one I wanted.  I guess I should have checked, but I didn't have my glasses on at the time.  And so it goes these days.  I'm still not much further along in finding the right purse to carry all my "stuff" than I was in November.

A Year's Worth Of Living

Janus1_2

As is the custom, I'm doing a bit of reflecting as the old year draws to its close and the new one is about to embark.

The year proved to be incredibly event-full and meaning-full for me. There were sad times...most notably, the death of two good friends...and bad times...but mostly, the year brought good times and good things. I log some of them here in gratitude.

  • First and foremost, I was given another year of good health and abundance.

  • With the exception of the two friends noted above, those I love were healthy and, as best I can tell, their lives full.

  • I continued my good luck of landing on my feet...even when I tripped over them breaking/dislocating my shoulder.

  • My wanderlust was well fed and satisfied.  In addition to some "local trips", I traveled to Arizona, San Francisco, and the Eastern Shore.

  • I had good and long awaited visits with dear, longtime friends and met new ones.

  • I set down some new roots in Floyd.

  • I rekindled my creative spirit and began writing again. I also jumped more fervently into photography. Doing so has made all the difference.  June has come back out to play!

  • I dared to expand my universe and in doing, dared to expose my "self" to others.

  • I followed through on my intention to volunteer.

  • I made progress on internal growth.  I'm not where I want to be, but I'm going in the right direction!

To all of you who helped these things happen, thank you.

Charlie Wilson's War

The other day I was in the mood for a movie and some popcorn.  Several  movies have been released lately that I want to see, but on this day, we opted to go see "Charlie Wilson's War"  starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.  I really enjoyed it. It tells its story ( a true one) very cleverly and the story it's telling is one worth thinking about: how the world really is a big cobweb of interactions....complicated and complex and counterintuitive.

It brings to mind some spatter of mine: "spiders have webs, but not just they...and more than flies get caught."

Friday Fact - Celebrating The New Year

"Happy New Year!"

That greeting will be said and heard for at least the first couple of weeks as the new year gets under way.  But did you know that the day celebrated as New Year's Day was not always January 1st?

The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago.  At around 2000 BC, Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year on what is now March 23rd with the first new moon (actually, the first visible crescent) after the the Vernal Equinox...the time of year that spring begins and new crops are planted...a time of renewal.

The Romans actually continued to observe the new year in March, but because various emperors continually tampered with the calendar, the calendar soon became out of sync with the sun.  What WERE they thinking?!

Then, in 153 BC, they declared...quite arbitrarily...January 1st as the beginning of the new year naming this first month of the year after the mythical figure of Janus ...a symbol of beginnings and endings, whose faces allow him to look both forward and backward in time.

Janus

Despite having seemingly resolved the matter (pun intended), tampering with the calendar continued and before you knew it, January 1st wasn't the new year any more.  I repeat, what WERE they thinking?!

Finally...in 46 BC...all the shuffling ended for good. Julius Caesar had the clout to establish what was to become known as the Julian calendar. It re-established January 1st as the new year once and for all.  It also  re-synchronized the calendar with the sun...which, by the way required that the previous year to drag on for 445 days.

And that's a Friday Fact!

Post Note
The Romans celebrated the new year by exchanging gifts and they had their own version of the tradition of resolution-making (something first begun by the Babylonians). A common resolution in ancient Rome was to seek forgiveness from enemies of previous years.  I guess we've expanded that to include seeking reconciliation with our own inner enemies like food!

Uninvited Guests

We have some uninvited guests.  Right there in the crook of our roof -  we've got bees...at least I think that's what they are.  I really haven't gotten close enough to one to tell...and don't care to!  Their shape is definitely bee vs wasp though.

They've been with us for a few weeks now and their constant swarming has me wondering if they might be the Africanized bees that have been working their way up from south and central America.

Beemap

Unfortunately, their nest is directly above where Judy, Shaynee and I like to sit.  We often sit outside under the palms and in the breeze watching the world go by.  Having these guys swarming above our heads is unsettling, to say the least.

  Wi_bee_spot_3

It's actually pretty high up, but it still makes us nervous...especially Judy who is highly allergic to insect stings.

Not only do we not like them hovering above us, but from watching them, we're thinking they may have made their way into our attic. Our minds think this way because we had some yellow-jackets take up residency at Blackberry Ridge a year or so ago.  They made it into the storage area and...when the wind blew the hatch door open...into the living area.  Fortunately, we weren't there at the time and when discovered, they had died...thousands of them...all over the house.  Needless to say, we plugged up everything we thought might be a way of entry and got the door secured better too.

I suppose sooner or later these guys will move on or die, but with Florida temperatures being so mild this year, it could take a while. I'm betting we don't wait.

I see that Blogger has once again provided a way for non-Blogger bloggers to leave a comment with their URL.  You sign in under "Nickname".  A URL box is either there or will drop down.  I don't know when this happened...but I just  noticed it today.  It's nice to have a way to comment with a direct URL link back.

Thank you Google. I'll take the piece of coal out of your stocking!

Are You Ready For Some Football?

Football fans here in south Florida sure are.  And they just might get it...next year.  The Miami Dolphins' 2007 season record is a horrid 1-13.  The one and only win to date came last week. You'd have thought from the celebrating that they had won the Super Bowl.

Just when there looked like there was no hope...just when people were starting to wonder if the team would be sold and/or leave Miami, the hapless Dolphins have gotten an early Christmas present: Bill Parcells

P1_parcells

It's been announced that the two-time Super Bowl champion coach signed a four year contract to head operations of the Dolphins...one day after turning down essentially the same role with the Atlanta Falcons. He'll be running the entire show and he'll be reporting straight to owner Wayne Huizenga.

This is quite the coup, and his coming has given south Florida renewed hope for better times.

Parcells...most recently of the Dallas Cowboys...has a long history of taking losing teams and transforming them into winners...Super Bowl winners at that. His game by game win-loss statistics aren't as impressive as you might expect given his reputation. But look at his teams' rankings and trips to the Super Bowl and you start to understand.

Can he do it again?  He'll have his hands full, that's for sure.
