Library Dedication
The event was well attended. The people of Floyd care about and love their public library as evidenced by the turnout and the fact that this project was actually funded in large part by private donations. Of course, it didn't hurt that Nikki Giovanni was the featured speaker.
In case anyone doesn't know, that's Nikki on the left talking to our landscaper Pamela. Last year when we were trying to decide what to plant in the new flower beds, Pamela took us to Nikki's house in Blacksburg to see samples of shrubs and trees she had in mind. Nikki could have stayed inside while we walked around, but she opted to come out and say hello. We had a nice chat about dogs and nature. She's definitely an interesting person to talk with...and one on my list of people who I'd love to have over for dinner and conversation.
By the way, Pamela was on the board of the library project and also donated time and materials to transform the exterior of the new building.
The ceremony began. A series of speakers got up to give their thank-yous and to reinforce the value of public libraries. I noticed a woman taking notes...no doubt for an article in The Floyd Press.
What's wrong with this picture? Why, it's not Colleen. Colleen is typically who you'll see with camera and pen covering these sorts of events, but she's off relaxing at Virginia Beach this week.
Finally, Nikki spoke. She congratulated Floyd Countians for recognizing the importance of libraries. She encouraged folks...especially the older ones...to write down their history. And she read poetry in only the way that Nikki can.
Post Note
It seems these ceremonies are getting to be regular events here in Floyd. Last year we saw the ribbon cutting for the town's Village Green. Now this year, the library. I wouldn't be surprised if next year we'll have one for Lineberry Park.

What a pure talent she is !!!loved her for years !!!
