Disappearing Act

Today was "spot compression", which turned out to be nothing more than another mammogram on the one breast.  The radiology technician showed me the questionable spot...sure enough, there it was.  By today though, it had disappeared.  Everything clear.

I confess I'm not the best at knowing flowers.  I think this is a zinnia, but could easily be talked out of it.  All I know is that it was living in Sonoma, California and it was beautiful to gaze upon.  The sun was out at the time I took the shot, but it had just rained...thus the wet sheen to it.

Movie Time - The Changeling

I saw The Changeling the other day..another powerful Clint Eastwood directed movie starring Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich. 

It's  based on the true story of a missing boy and subsequent discovery of the Wineville Chicken Murders.  It's a gruesome story.  Most murders are.  But an integral part of being disturbed about this particular murder story is how the L.A. Police Department behaved. It actually happened and that makes it all the worse. The movie will  give you pause and make you think.  I definitely recommend it.

Wineville is now Mira Loma.  The town changed its name in 1930 largely due to the vast amount of negative publicity surrounding this case.

Architectual Shadow

I'll bet that title made you think you were going to see a wonderful cityscape of some sort.  Sorry.  It's actually the words used on the report that came back with my mammogram.  I guess "spot" wouldn't do for the medical community, though that's just the word they're using to describe what I need to have done now:  a spot compression. It seems to me that this would have been just the time to use a fancy phrase instead of something that instills the image of pain!  

My first thought of hearing this...aside from "ouch"... was how easy it is for the hospital to report something vaguely troubling so as to get a second procedure done and more revenue in.  I guess that's what twenty-five years in law enforcement will do to ones mind.   I've sometimes thought along the same line when seeing a few pennies' charge for some weird thing on my phone bill.  AT&T knows most, if not all, customers won't take the time and trouble to make inquiries for an amount so small.,  But five cents times a few million accounts each month adds up nicely for them.  And yes, I still think there was more to the JFK assassination than Lee Harvey Oswald. 

Despite these conspiracy theory tendencies, I'm following through.  I've got my appointment made for this coming Tuesday.

Flashback Friday - Christmas Trees

Last year I posted a picture of me on my tricycle in front of our Christmas tree.  I was about two or three years old.  I do remember helping to put up and take down real trees, so we must have kept "real" for some years on, but by the time the picture below was taken a few years later, my family had abandoned real trees for the fake ones.  Here's the one I remember best...an aluminum one.  I was twelve...the year was 1964. 

Back then, at least in Florida, aluminum trees were the rage...its color came from a turning multi-colored disk set on the floor beside it...blue, red, green, gold.  Its branches were so scrawny that you could see the stem pole.  I do see one of my favorite ornaments there almost on the bottom left...a little snowman. 

I never much cared for fake trees in general, and this aluminum style in particular.  While I felt somewhat in vogue, I missed the smell and feel and look of the real McCoy.  Thankfully, I was able to get a taste of one whenever I went over to my friend Meg's house.  Her family always had a real tree and it was always a giant one with grand trimmings.  Their house could handle it.  I loved going over to see it...I even helped trim it some.  Meg and her mom would play Christmas carol duets on their piano and we all would sing.  It's a wonderful memory.
