Macro Monday - Dew Drops

This past week I bought a barely used macro lens from a friend.   It's a Tokina f2.8 100mm. He was selling it and another wide angle lens to help pay for his new telephoto.  I've long wanted one, but couldn't bring myself to pay the price for the Nikon 105mm.  So when he announced his intention...and his price...I jumped.  He let me play with it some before purchasing and while I definitely am going to have a learning curve, I could tell I was going to be happy with it.  This photo was taken with it.

Macro Monday - Lily Pads

These lily pads caught my eye because of the water puddled in their centers, but then I noticed how their outer rim had been nibbled by the coots, turtles, etc.  So much life going on before us if we just look.  That's one of the things I like about photography...it hones ones' eye.

I thought I'd re-post my ghoulish leaf photo to wish everyone a Happy Halloween.  I  confessI get a chuckle each time I see it and since many readers weren't around last year, I figured what the heck.

A Glorious Day

After a few days of cold and wet weather, the sun came out here in Floyd.  It's still cold, but because of the sun it's gorgeous and glorious!  After running a few errands, we took a drive up to the Parkway to see the colors.  We headed for the lookout called The Saddle....always a fun place for us to go since Buffalo Mountain can be seen looking one way and our house can be seen when looking the other. 

Buffalo Mountain pictured above gets its name from its shape...looks like the humped back of a buffalo, no?  As it happens, we can't see Buffalo Mountain from our house because Panther's Knob is directly in line with it and blocks our view. 

Turn around at the lookout and you see the photo above.  There in the middle of the frame is our house...green roof.  Clicking on the photo will give you a better look.

We got our fill, then headed home.  Once there, Judy got to work on her project: making a shelf to be mounted above the workbench in the shed.  Then, she mounted the lids to several small jars to the bottom of it.  Now the jars will screw out of and into their lids for easy access while working.  Very clever, she is!

While she was doing that, I took some random pictures around the grounds. First some leaves on one of our maple trees...

Then one of the river birches we planted this year.  The cage is to protect against deer damage.  We put it up around all of our young trees after deer came by a few weeks ago and scraped them all up...some pretty severely.

In case you're wondering, that's an Obama sign to the left  We have some traffic now that hunting season has started and thought we'd give the McCain/Palin supporters something to shoot at.  Just kidding...I hope!  You never know these days what with all the "red meat" rhetoric going on.

And finally, our little Shaynee all decked out in her blaze orange winter parka...she has a little t-shirt (same color) that she wears when it's just cool, but wears this when it's really cold. 

She's so cute!  But then, I'm prejudiced. 







 

Fall Colors Western Style

Color is popping out around me, but I thought I'd share some color I saw while in Utah.  Yes, you are noticing correctly: a lot of Utah related posts these days.  Not surprising, I suppose. 

While I missed the peak for golden aspens by about a week, there were enough that had turned to give me a taste of it.   I was thrilled.  These aren't what I would consider great shots, but considering most were taken through the window of a moving bus, I'm satisfied.  Trust me though, they were gorgeous to see...I loved the juxtaposition of their color against the Ponderosa Pines and their quaking leaves.  Hope you enjoy!
